105 | Be the Authority with Gene Hammett

Gene HammettWhat does it take to position yourself before the sale? Who is an AUTHORITY? An individual who embodies the term Authority distinguishes themselves from being A choice to being THE choice. Like so many other podcasts on Leaders in the Trenches, this heavily stems down to having a healthy mindset. It’s also becoming aware of the part of yourself that could be sabotaging you and your business.

An AUTHORITY is perceived as the professional. They are seen as the choice. They embody influence, impact and income (get paid more). Those are three essential elements to an Authority. An Authority is also someone who is not “absolute” in their ways- but someone who is constantly growing and changing.

Gene’s Target audience: Gene works with entrepreneurs who want to find the perfect match between their unique value and the people who will become their best clients and biggest fans.

So, how does one exactly embody being an Authority? Here are 5 equally important factors:

Being intentional about what you give away– This positions you as an authority because you give away and are creating things of value (i.e- a blog post, a video, a speech, blog, etc).

The people you serve (clients)- Where are they going? Have they gained value as a result of working with you?

Results are all about impact– What did you do to help them grow towards or attain their goal? Though this may be hard to measure you’ve got to present some type of result (whether it’s subjective or quantitative).

Who do you associate with?- Remember, you are the average of the 5 people you hang out with. This is important to your own success.

What are others saying about you?– Previous podcast guest Jonah Berger claims only 7% of word of mouth is online. Most “word of mouth’ occurs face to face. What people say about you to their people is important.

Gene HammettAnd what are the 3 things that get in the way of your healthy mindset? This is what we will call “enemies to authority”:

“The Dabbler”- This is someone who has a whole list of things on their website- the jack of all trades. This person needs to be more focused. What do you stand for? Make a stance! It should be strong, bold and focused.

“The Waiter”- This is someone who is waiting for the business to come to them.

“The Professor”- An individual who thinks they know it all. Someone who thinks they know it all is not open to testing new things. In contrast, the authority brings curiosity and openness to all situations.

“The Student”- Is someone who is always seeking new informations, programs, etc without implementing and not starting.

“Status Quo Joe” – Is happy where he is. He is in his comfort zone and never wants to push the envelope.

When you take a stance on being an Authority, these are the 3 things you must face:

  • Believe and decide
  • Intentional alignment of authority
  • Be willing to face the fears and the hard stuff (getting out of your comfort zone)
