408 | Better Delegating Requires You to Stop This

Better delegating will help you be a better leader. It will be hard to do what I ask. It will go against what you believe to your core as a leader. And it will change the way your team performs over time. Better delegating is very important to your growth as a leader and for accelerated growth as a company.

Do you wanna know how to better delegate your task and the work that needs to be done to the staff that you have, where all of the employees that really require guidance? Well, if you’re a leader, then you really think about how do you get more done, how do you engage people, how do you get them to go beyond responsibility to take real ownership?

Now that may be a new term for you or maybe you’ve heard my message before, but going beyond responsibility is really the key.

Who am I, my name’s Gene Hammett. I am the host of Leaders in the Trenches. This is a little bit of a micro-episode where I share with you about better delegating. My work is to work with leaders of fast-growth companies that want to understand growth and create the kind of experience in their culture and leadership that activates that sense of ownership.

My best clients believe that employees are very important to their success, and they believe that employees are first. Without further adieu, here’s how to better delegate. The title of this was something I have to smile when I say because it’s about the things that you need to stop doing if you want to delegate better. Now I say this strongly because I want you to really understand, that most delegation is about task, about do X, or do Y as a task. I work with one of my VAs today who was helping me with a project, and I wanted her to send out 30 emails to potential guests for my podcast. And so we talked about the goal of that.

Now I helped her with what needs to be done, but I want you to understand that your best thing to do is not to delegate tasks, but it is to delegate outcomes. It is to talk about what needs to get done as a knowledge worker, as someone that you really expect to be able to think for themselves, to be able to create new ways of doing and behaving inside the business to look for ways to improve, to grow. You want them to think for themselves. And you can’t do that if you always delegate the task. My challenge to you to be a better delegator is to delegate the outcome. The outcome is what you’re hoping to create.

The vision for the future. And you talk about that first, and then you can support them through the task, but do it in a different way than just assigning them tasks, you want them to think for themselves. You want for them to think about the process.

What they need from you to get that done, or what they need from the team as a whole. And you want them to think for themselves consistently, so you’re not actually telling them exactly what to do because if you want them to take ownership, they must have a part of the process. And if they want ownership of the goal, give them ownership of the process. We’ve talked a lot about a lot of things here today. I wanted to share this with you because very specifically, if you want to delegate better, then you wanna stop delegating the task and delegate the outcomes.

My name is Gene Hammett. I work with fast-growth leaders to help them become more than what they see today, to really create a sense of confidence and clarity around who they are as a leader. I help them do that and grow their companies. And if you have any questions for me about what I do and the work I do, make sure you reach out to me at LeadersInTheTrenches.com or GeneHammett.com. As always, lead with courage, and I’ll see you next time.
