Oftentimes I talk about the feeling of ownership inside of our companies. As leaders, we want our employees to have that feeling of ownership, don’t you? But I was talking to some leaders the other day, and I switched the question around a little bit. I asked these leaders, what does it feel like when your employees take ownership of their work, the client experience? What does it feel like?

The one word that came back was a relief. When you think about those talented people inside your organization, when you hand them a project and you know that it’s done, or essentially done, you know that it’ll be done right, it’ll be done with creativity, it’ll be done with value in mind. You know that feeling of relief, right? What would it be like if more people across the organization were able to operate that same way?

They took ownership so that you felt relief. When you think about your job as a leader, you have to grow, you have to challenge other people to grow, but when you get there when you actually get to the place where you have people that are empowered, they’re making decisions, they’re not waiting for you to review it, they are really pushing forward on the envelope of the company, without you and with you. The meetings go on without you. When you show up they’re even more charged, but you know that the work is getting done the right way, ’cause people are taking ownership. But this whole feeling of relief really is up to you. Are you pushing the boundaries of your own leadership so that you empower them to feel like owners?

Do you have a level of transparency that is necessary to create that? Are you including them in decisions? Are you creating a trust? Are you really allowing them to grow to the point where they feel like what they’re doing really matters? There’s a lot of factors to the feeling of ownership but today I wanted to just highlight what leaders feel when they know that people are taking ownership, and it’s relief.
